Understanding Blockchain Transaction Fees
Blockchain transaction fees deter network spam and compensate validators or miners depending on the protocol. Fee levels can rise during congestion but vary widely between networks.
Base fee and congestion
Each network defines how fees are measured—satoshis per byte, gas units, or fixed minimums. Wallets usually suggest an adequate fee automatically. Advanced users can inspect fee statistics via node APIs documented by each project.
Reserve and account requirements
Some chains require a minimum balance to activate an account or to hold certain token types. That locked balance is not the same as a per-transaction fee but still affects usability.
Summary
Fees are a usability feature, not an investment return mechanism. Keep a small buffer of the native asset in self-custody wallets for fees and account requirements.
